Seasoned firewood

Seasoned Firewood

Seasoned firewood should be dried and weathered over time, cracks and splits will begin to shown in the wood and the bark will start to come away during handling. The moisture levels of a seasoned fire wood is lower (less than 30% moisture) it burns hotter and more efficiently than unseasoned logs.

Hardwood

Hardwood logs are much more dense compared to softwood and therefore burn hotter. Hardwood logs are heavier, provide more energy and therefore require less refuelling intervals. You generally use less hardwood logs than softwood. Hard woods are excellent when requiring fires that burn for longer and produce lots of heat, they are brilliant for fires during the winter periods.

Hardwood Tree Types

  • Oak
  • Birch
  • Beech
  • Ash
  • Crab Apple
  • Sycamore

Softwood

Softwood Fire logs are easier to burn and light more rapidly they are excellent for low heat fires, ideal for the autumn and spring time of the year.

Softwood Tree Types

  • Evergreens
  • All types of Pine
  • Spruce

Unseasoned Fresh Fire Wood

Fresh firewood will not have signs of cracking or splitting and will be heavy and resinous. The bark will be firmly attached. Fresh wood . Fresh wood should be avoided due to the higher moisture levels (over 60% moisture) burning unseasoned fresh firewood can clog up fire chimneys linings due to low heat levels produced, smoldering fires and tree resins not burning off at higher temperatures..
